Native American Flute Player to Give Free Concert
Native American flute player and dancer Kevin Locke will perform a free concert in the Coolidge Auditorium, Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St., S.E. on Tuesday, February 27, from noon to 1 p.m. The concert, which is free and open to the public, is cosponsored by the Music Division and the American Folklife Center.
Kevin Locke, a 1990 National Heritage Fellow, is one of the best-known American Indian artists of North America. Reared on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, Mr. Locke lived with an elderly uncle who spoke only Lakota and taught him the traditions of his culture. In addition to playing the seven-note cedarwood flute, Kevin performs as a hoop dancer, a Lakota tradition that involves 28 hoops in a complex dance in which they twirl and intertwine to create images of the natural and spiritual world. He has performed his music and dance in more than 70 countries.
