"Globalization and Identity in Muslim Societies" Symposium at the Library of Congress

The African and Middle Eastern Division and the Office of Scholarly Programs will present a two-panel symposium on Tuesday, September 12, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on "Globalization and Identity in Muslim Societies" in room LJ 119 of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E. This event is made possible through the generous support of the Rockefeller Foundation. It is open to the public.

The speakers will include Professor Emeritus Mohamed Arkoun of the Sorbonne University in Paris, who will give the keynote address; Professor Suleiman Nyang, Chairman of the African Studies Department at Howard University, who will discuss the topic of Globalization and identity in Sub- Saharan Africa; Professor Jon W. Anderson, the Chair of the Anthropology Department at Catholic University, who will make a presentation on the impact of the new global technology on identity in the countries of the Persian Gulf; Dr. Abdou Filali-Ansary, Director of the King Abdul-Aziz Foundation in Casablanca, who will talk about globalization and the building of a new sense of identity in Muslim societies; Dr. Mina Marefat, head of Design Research, an architecture and preservation institution, who will talk about globalization and architecture in Iran; and Dr. Marvin Weinbaum, of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the Department of State, who will examine the issue of globalization and identity in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Drs. Mary-Jane Deeb and Prosser Gifford of the Library of Congress will chair the panels.
