Robert Giroux To Present Keynote Talk At October 3-5 Symposium on Publishing Archives

Robert Giroux, former chairman of the editorial board of Farrar, Straus & Giroux Inc. and one of the foremost editors in American publishing, will present the keynote address at "Publishing Archives in the 1990s: The Changing Marketplace, Technology, and Scholarship," a symposium to be held at Columbia University on Oct. 3-5, 1996.

The meeting will bring together publishers, book industry analysts, scholars, and librarians to examine the importance, collection, and use of publishing archives. Open to the public, the symposium is sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, Columbia University's Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Association of American Publishers, and the Book Industry Study Group.

Participants include Lisa Browar of the Lilly Library at Indiana University; Jim Milliot, Business Editor, Publishers Weekly; Thomas F. Staley, Ransom Research Center, University of Texas; Mary Levering, Copyright Office, Library of Congress; Donald Lamm, chairman, W. W. Norton Company; William L. Joyce, Princeton University Library; Laura Gasaway, Law School, University of North Carolina; Judith Platt and Allan Adler, the Association of American Publishers; Kate Wittenberg, Columbia University Press; Beth Luey, Arizona State University; Sandra K. Paul, Book Industry Study Group; and David McKitterick, Trinity College Library, Cambridge, England. Jean Ashton, Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Columbia University, and John Y. Cole, Center for the Book, Library of Congress, are the conference organizers and moderators.

Conference sessions will begin on the Columbia University campus in the Dag Hammarskjold Lounge, School of International and Public Affairs Building, 6th floor, at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4. The last session concludes at 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 5. No reservations are needed.

Reservations are required for the Oct. 3 conference dinner and Mr. Giroux's keynote address. There is a $30 charge for the dinner, payable at the door. The deadline for dinner reservations is Sept. 2.
