Library of Congress Schedules Armenian Lecture for May 1

Ronald G. Suny, professor of political science at the University of Chicago, will deliver the fourth annual Vardanants Day Armenian lecture at the Library of Congress at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 1. The event will take place in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of the Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E.

The topic for Dr. Suny's presentation is "Nation-making, Nation-breaking and the End of Empire: A New Perspective on the Events of 1915." Dr. Suny has written extensively on the modern history of Armenia and Georgia and brings a fascinating new perspective to the question of the fate and tragedy of the Armenians in the declining days of the Ottoman Empire.

The lecture series is named after the Armenian holiday that commemorates the battle of Avarayr in 451 A.D., in which General Vardan Mamikonian led Armenian forces against the Persian troops sent to convert the Armenian nation from Christianity to Zoroastrianism.

Parking will be available in the Madison garage to those who call (202) 707-5680 and leave their names and the number in their party before noon, Monday, April 29.

As with all Library public programs, interpreting services (American Sign Language, Contact Signing, Oral and Tactile) will be provided if requested five business days in advance of the lecture. Call (202) 707-6362, TTY and voice, to make a specific request. For other ADA accommodations, please contact the Disability Employment office (202) 707-9948 TTY and (202) 707-7544 voice.
