Hispanic Division: Back to Agricultural Settlements in Central California
Portuguese Catholic Church in OaklandMuch of the social life in Portuguese-immigrant communities revolved around church activities. In Oakland, that early focus was provided by St. Joseph's Portuguese Catholic Church, founded in 1892. The entrance to the parish church is illustrated in this 1942 photograph. This modest frame structure, which is located at the corner of 7th and Chestnut Streets, is shown but not identified on the bird's-eye view of Oakland.
