Media Advisory: Library of Congress Bicentennial Program To Be Unveiled
Major Gifts to be Announced
At a press briefing on Monday, October 6, Librarian of
Congress James H. Billington will describe plans for the
celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the
Library of Congress in the year 2000. The briefing, at 11 a.m.
will be held in the Librarian's ceremonial office in the newly-restored Thomas Jefferson Building. This private office, rarely
seen by the public, is one of the most richly decorated rooms in
the building and contains the vault where the contents of
Lincoln's pockets on the night of his assassination were kept for
many years.
The Ceremonial Office is located on the first floor of the
Thomas Jefferson Building, 1st and Independence Ave. S.E. Use
the Visitors' Center entrance on the ground floor.
In addition to discussing the scope of the special
activities planned between now and 2000, Dr. Billington will
unveil a new logo and theme for the celebration, as well as
announce the first major donations received to support the
bicentennial program.
