Welcome to NIYLP
Empowering Native Youth Through Experiential Education
Imagine your first experience rappelling down a mountain; or what it feels like to camp in the wilderness for several days. Imagine learning the history and cultural significance of a particular rock formation or plant you’ve seen but never known; or volunteering at a local zoo that features animals from your own back yard. These are just a few examples of what the National Indian Youth Leadership Project (NIYLP) has been doing for over 25 years to empower the lives of Native American youth. Through year-round adventure-based learning in area mid schools, Project Venture seeks to foster youth leaders who are culturally sensitive and promote healthy lifestyles as an example for future generations. Whether building with adobe, mountain biking, hiking or learning basic outdoor survival skills, Project Venture actively engages youth in a proven and effective method of developing life skills while reinforcing traditional Native values. Through year-round in school and after school programming, we keep youth actively engaged in problem solving, communication, cooperation and team building through experiential games and activities. And, we are nationally recognized as the first Native American Model Program for resilience to alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse. Take a moment to find out how NIYLP has earned such a successful reputation working with Native youth!

"In the beginning were the instructions. We were to have compassion for one another, to live and work together, to depend on each other for support. We were told we were all related and interconnected to each other."
