>> NOAA's role in the U.S. Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System Program

NOAA is providing technical support to the U.S. Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System (IOTWS) Program. This effort is a USAID-funded program to support the development of an operational Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System for tsunamis and related coastal hazards at the regional, national, and local level in coordination with the international community.

Specifically, NOAA is providing institutional and technical support to the United Nations Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission; technology transfer for DART buoys, tide gauges, and related detection equipment; tsunami detection, prediction, and warning formulation; communications systems and integration; hazard mapping and modeling; and support for local preparedness including development of an Indian Ocean TsunamiResilient Communities activity.
