Key Public Health Facts

  • Only 20 percent of the nation's estimated 400,000 to 500,000 public health professionals have the education and training needed to do their jobs most effectively.

  • Approximately half of the 2 million deaths in the U.S. each year could be prevented.

  • Public health professionals—in their roles as environmental monitors, inspectors, consumer educators and health care providers—significantly reduce the number of preventable deaths.

Grant Programs

  • Public Health Training Centers assess workforce learning needs and provide tailored distance learning and related educational programs. Current Grantees

  • Public Health Traineeship grants are awarded to accredited schools of public health and other public or nonprofit private institutions accredited to provide graduate or specialized training in public health. Grant recipients select individuals to receive traineeships public health professions experiencing critical shortages, including epidemiology, environmental health, biostatistics, toxicology, nutrition, and maternal and child health. Students interested in applying for a public health traineeship should contact the grantee. Current grantees

  • Preventive Medicine Residency grants are awarded to accredited, public or non-profit private, schools of allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, or public health located in a State. Grantees plan and develop new residency training programs; maintain or improve existing residency training programs; and provide financial assistance to residency trainees enrolled in the programs. Individuals interested in applying for a preventive medicine residence should contact the grantee. Current grantees

  • Health Administration Traineeship and Special Project grants are awarded to public or non-profit private educational entities, including graduate schools of social work (excluding accredited schools and programs of public health) that offer programs in health administration, hospital administration or health policy analysis and planning accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education. Grantees award traineeships to students. Students interested in applying for a public health traineeship should contact the grantee. Current grantees
