The electromagnetic interference discipline includes study and characterization of aircraft avionics and systems responses to external electromagnetic (EM) fields caused by radars, radio and television transmitters, and other transmitters. It considers interference to aircraft systems due to other systems installed on an aircraft.

This discipline assesses the effects and risks of lightning strikes to aircraft and precipitation static, and evaluates designs to assure safe operation of aircraft in an electromagnetic environment. Also, this discipline is responsible for assessing effects on aircraft systems caused by electromagnetic radiation from portable electronic devices (e.g., wireless network and mobile phones) carried on board an aircraft.
