Description

White-footed mice are small rodents, with their body and head measuring between 3 3/5 and 4 1/5 inches. Their tail is shorter than their body and head.

Habitat

They are usually found in wooded areas, occasionally being found in open meadows and fields.

Diet

White-footed mice eat insects, nuts, seeds, and fruits. They store the seeds and nuts for winter feeding.

Range

White-footed mice are found in all of the eastern states (except for Florida) and as far west as Arizona.

Other Useful Information

White-footed mice can live 2-3 years in the wild; they can live up to 5 years in captivity.

Similar Species

Deer mice and white-footed mice look very similar and can be difficult to tell apart. Deer mice’s tails are bicolored. A white-footed mouse’s tail is generally shorter than its body and head.
