2002 — Developing and Validating Quality Metrics for Acute Care

Workshop Objectives:
The workshop is intended to 1) critique and improve a system to identify, develop, and validate important quality metrics for acute care that rely solely on computerized data in the electronic medical record and 2) delineate feedback systems and implementation approaches based on the metrics.
Activities:
Using the VA IPEC database, the methods and lessons learned from developing a series of quality metrics addressing different domains such as efficiency, effectiveness, safety, adherence to evidence-based practices in the ICU will be presented and its potential applicability to acute care explored. Selection of the quality measure as a target, data validation approaches, strategies to correctly select relevant patient populations, and access to data elements will be covered. Feedback to practitioners uses web-based access to data, performance measures, regional conference calls.

Health services researchers with interest in implementation research and experience developing quality metrics whose primary clinical focus is acute care.
