About the HuGE Published Literature Database (HuGE Pub Lit)
Read scientific article on the database by Lin et al., American Journal of Epidemiology (2006)

In 2001, the Human Genome Epidemiology Network launched the HuGE Published Literature database (HuGE Pub Lit) as part of an effort to develop a searchable, updated online knowledge base of population-based, epidemiologic studies of human genes published in journals included in PubMed. HuGE Pub Lit is the cornerstone of GDPInfo, a larger, coordinated information system that captures and organizes information on genomics and public health.

HuGE Pub Lit contains links to abstracts on PubMed that meet a complex set of search criteria. The links are indexed to allow users to find articles of interest based on a broad or narrow search strategy defined by gene, disease, in tera cting risk factor, study design or analysis, or any combination of terms in these categories.

CDC research staff is responsible for extracting relevant articles from PubMed into the HuGE Pub Lit database on a weekly basis. The current method involves both manual and computerized processes. First, titles, abstracts and PubMed fields (e.g., MeSH terms) are searched using a complex search query, which identifies on average 1,800 new articles per week. A researcher familiar with the eligibility criteria for human genome epidemiology then reviews each title and abstract (or in a few cases, full text) to decide whether the study will be included in the database and to assign index terms.

The process for identifying HuGE published literature is currently restricted to the contents of PubMed and limited by the information content of titles, abstracts and other PubMed fields for individual articles. Efforts are underway to improve and expand the scope of the database. Contact us: HuGE@cdc.gov .
