1998: NCCS sponsors "The March…Coming Together to Conquer Cancer" on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on September 25 and 26; days later, Congress awards a 16-percent increase in NCI funding

2003: ACS releases health behavior guidelines for cancer patients and survivors


2005: The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) creates a committee to develop guidelines for survivors' follow-up care and a "Survivorship" track for its annual scientific meetings
