STATEMENT FROM REGENT FRED BOICE, “The budget cuts that were
proposed today are cataclysmic in the depth and breadth of devastation
they will cause to our higher education system in Arizona. Our
universities are prepared to do their fair share to help our state out
of the budget crisis; however the legislature has proposed
disproportionate cuts that are simply impossible to institute without
gutting our universities. “Make no mistake about it; when drastic cuts to the universities are implemented, large numbers of university staff and faculty will lose their jobs, and there will be extensive elimination of programs and classes—creating a hole in the quality and quantity of our systems’ offerings of generational proportions. “At a time when enrollment is increasing at historic levels, destructive cuts will undoubtedly lead to large tuition increases to maintain a basic level of services—pricing Arizonans out of the promise of a college degree. “Crippling cuts will also severely compromise our state’s future, so much so it may never recover. Our legislators must realize the long-term consequences that are not easily reversible, such as lost business, workforce and related revenues. To not acknowledge this is not only poor public policy, it’s irresponsible and unconscionable.” Media: For assistance in reaching Regent
Boice, or any of the regents, please call Andrea Smiley, ABOR staff, at
602-229-2543 or 480-766-6553. Thank you.
The Agenda for the January 22-23, 2009 meeting of the Board is available. The meeting will take place on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson.
