Hospital Stays Involving Musculoskeletal Procedures, 1997–2005

Increases in knee and hip replacement procedures witnessed during the 1990s continued from 1997 to 2005. Over this time period, the volume of knee arthroplasties and hip replacements rose by about 69 percent (from 328,800 procedures to 555,800 procedures) and about 32 percent (from 290,700 procedures to 383,500 procedures), respectively.
