  Overview
Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge
Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was established in 1975 for its "particular value in carrying out the national migratory bird management program." The refuge, which is cooperatively managed with The Trustees of Reservations, encompasses 24 acres at Great Point. Nantucket NWR is an un-staffed unit of the Eastern Massachusetts NWR Complex.


Getting There . . .
For information about ferry service from Hyannis to Nantucket, call (508) 477-8600. Access to the refuge is via over-sand vehicle (permit required), bicycle, foot, or boat. For information about purchasing a permit, contact The Trustees of Reservations at (508) 228-6799.

Wildlife and Habitat
The refuge is an important stopover site for migratory birds and protects habitat for the Federally threatened piping plover and State-listed least tern. The largest eastern red cedar savanna in New England lies within the refuge boundary.

History
The Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is one of more than 540 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System throughout the United States. The National Wildlife Refuge System is the world's largest and most diverse collection of lands and waters specifically set aside for the conservation and management of wildlife resources. Nantucket NWR is one of eight refuges comprising the Eastern Massachusetts NWR Complex. These ecologically diverse refuges include the Assabet River, Great Meadows, Mashpee, Massasoit, Monomoy, Nantucket, Nomans Land Island, and Oxbow NWRs.

Managment Activities

Through a cooperative management agreement with The Trustees of Reservations, the public is restricted from entering certain areas within the refuge when and where piping plovers and least terns are nesting.
