Drs. Patricia Walker and Thomas Darling

Drs. Patricia Walker and Thomas Darling, both of NCI's Dermatology Branch, will be awarded two of the five Young Investigator Awards of the American Academy of Dermatology at its national meeting in San Francisco this month. Walker has helped develop a gene therapy approach where genes are introduced and expressed in skin by injecting naked plasmid DNA into the dermis. Her most recent research is focused on development of an effective vaccine for leishmaniasis. Darling is using molecular approaches to analyze candidate genes for evidence of mutations that account for subepidermal blister formation in patients with a form of epidermolysis bullosa.
