Dr. Axel V. Wolff
Dr. Axel V. Wolff has been named
director of NCRR's Veterinary Resources Program,
which provides veterinary support services to NIH
intramural scientists. He oversees the largest
federal animal research program and manages
450,000-square feet of American Association for the
Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care
(AAALAC)-accredited animal holding space in
Bethesda and Poolesville. Wolff joined NCRR in
1989, serving as a veterinarian at the NIH Animal
Center in Poolesville. In 1996, he was promoted to
chief, Laboratory Animal
Service-Poolesville.
Dr. J. Taylor Harden
Dr. J. Taylor Harden has joined the National Institute
on Aging as an assistant to the director for
special populations. She comes to NIA from NINR and
will assist NIA with its research and training
programs for special populations, which include the
Summer Institute on Aging Research and efforts
focused on women, minorities and the disabled. From
1992 to 1994, she was an associate professor at the
University of Texas Health Science Center at San
Antonio School of Nursing. She has already
collaborated with NIA on a number of programs,
including the Study of Women's Health Across the
Nation, and looks forward to working on many new
initiatives.
BIG Installs New Officers
The passing of a gavel officially marked the beginning of a new era for Blacks in Government (BIG) as Felicia Shingler was installed recently as president of the NIH chapter. A writer-editor in NIH's Office of Policy for Extramural Research Administration, Shingler became the eighth president in the chapter's history, succeeding Zita Givens at the helm of one of BIG's most prestigious chapters.
Shingler is a lifetime BIG member who brings to her new position extensive experience with the organization: member since 1989, former chair of the chapter's young adult resource and development committee, member of BIG's national membership committee, and member of the task force on fairness and employment practices under former NIH director Dr. Bernadine Healy.
Her theme for this administration is "Communication -- Bridge for Unity," a reflection of her commitment to foster greater communication and understanding between BIG and NIH management and employees.
