Rita R. Colwell, Ph.D., served as the 11th Director of the National Science Foundation from 1998 to 2004. As NSF Director, she served as Co-chair of the Committee on Science of the National Science and Technology Council. Before joining NSF, she was the President of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute and Professor of Microbiology and Biotechnology at the University of Maryland. Her interests are global infectious diseases, water, and health. She has authored or co-authored 16 books and more than 700 scientific publications. She earned her Ph.D. in Oceanography at the University of Washington, Seattle. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research is the nation's leading funder of research on oral, dental, and craniofacial health. The FIC addresses global health challenges through innovative and collaborative research and training programs and supports and advances the NIH mission through international partnerships.
