AUGUSTA, Maine – Just three weeks remain for northern Maine residents to register for state and federal disaster assistance for the flooding that occurred from April 28-May 14. The deadline to apply is July 8, 2008.

"Anyone living in Aroostook or Penobscot County who was impacted by the floods should apply for assistance," said State Coordinating Officer Ginnie Ricker. "Don't miss this deadline because you think your damage is too minor to worry about. What seems to be minor flood damage now could turn into mold or structural problems later."

Those who suffered damage should call the FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for persons with special speech or hearing needs. Registration line hours are from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday. Applicants may also register any time online at www.fema.gov.

SBA officials urge those individuals and businesses who received disaster loan applications to submit their applications for assistance before the deadline. For assistance in completing the loan application or to ask questions, applicants may visit the SBA Disaster Loan Outreach Center in the Fort Kent Town Hall, which is open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday thru Friday. A FEMA representative is also at the Center to answer questions and provide assistance. Those unable to visit the center can call SBA’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955 (Mon.-Fri. 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM; Saturday/Sunday 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM ET).

"Individuals with insurance should apply before the deadline even if they have not received their insurance settlement as they may be eligible for disaster assistance for under-insured losses," said Federal Coordinating Officer Phil Parr of FEMA. "However, in order to receive assistance, FEMA will need the insurance settlement information to avoid any duplication of benefits."
