Corps of Engineers provides Lock and Dam 9 statistics for the 2008 navigation season

SAINT PAUL, MINN. – Exactly 4,170 vessels and 10,368,822 tons of cargo passed through Lock and Dam 9, located near Lynxville, Wis., during the 2008 navigation season from April 11-Nov. 29. The MV Gold Cup was the last tow to pass through Nov. 29.
Of these vessels, 904 were commercial, 3,185 were recreational and 81 were of the other category, such as government watercraft. This number marks a decrease in navigation traffic from 2007, where 5,166 craft passed through Lock and Dam 9 – 1,179 of them commercial, 3,959 of them recreational and 28 other.
In 2007, the amount of commodities transported through Lock and Dam 9 was 13,354,186 tons.

Navigation statistics fluctuate from year to year, depending on the weather, the flows and the length of the navigation season.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, constructed Lock and Dam 9 in 1937 and maintains it to this day. A major rehabilitation of this lock occurred in 2006.
