The ERDC, through its Hazardous Waste Research Center (HWRC), is the lead DoD research laboratory for the development of innovative technologies for the remediation of explosives, heavy metals, and selected organic compounds in soil, sediment, water, groundwater, and man-made structures. The HWRC is the only DoD research facility permitted under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act to conduct large-scale treatment process research on contaminated materials. Alternative remediation technologies are constantly being investigated to make cleanup technologies more complete, more cost-effective, and faster. Current research includes biotechnology, such as intrinsic, bioslurry, biocell, and constructed wetlands; advanced oxidation processes, polymeric and natural sorbents, heavy metal extractions, and electrokinetic remediation of soils. Technologies developed at the ERDC have been transferred to all military services for cleanup of groundwater and soils at many military sites and to the EPA and states for remediation of Superfund sites. The ERDC is also working with several private companies under cooperative research and development agreements to expedite transfer of ERDC-developed remediation technologies to the commercial/private sector. |
