National Geodetic Survey - CORS

image of NGS/CORS data coverage

The National Geodetic Survey (NGS), an office of NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS),coordinates two networks of Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) that provide Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements in support of a broad spectrum of navigation and positioning applications in the U.S. and its territories.

Through a Memorandum of Agreement, NGDC is the designated alternate facility as required under the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) for the main NGS CORS facility in Silver Spring, MD. NGDC operates the secondary CORS facility (also known as 'CORS-West') that ingests, stores, and distributes CORS data in partnership with NGS.

As a separate function, NGDC also places the NGS CORS data into the NGDC archive, as per the NOAA/NOS Records Disposition Schedule, section 1602-12.
