Monday, May 21, 2001 -- Air travel continued to grow last year with more flights, passengers, revenue
passenger-miles and ton-miles of freight in 2000 than in 1999, according to the Bureau of Transportation
Statistics (BTS) year-end report on aviation traffic.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta said the BTS report provides additional support for
action to increase the capacity of the nation’s aviation system. "We must begin to take action to
close the gap between the growing demand for aviation services and the capacity of our infrastructure,"
Secretary Mineta said. "We need to make more efficient use of the nation's airspace in the short run
and, for the long term, focus on expanding airport capacity, and building new airports and more runways
at existing airports."
Dr. Ashish Sen, BTS Director, said the collection and distribution of detailed airline statistics
by BTS could provide needed information for decision-makers seeking to make improvements in the
aviation system. "It is BTS’s role to collect and disseminate the information needed to improve
the transportation system of the 21st century," he said.
The fastest growth was in international air service, where revenue passenger miles increased by 7.2
percent, flights by 7.5 percent and freight by 9.7 percent on scheduled service. On scheduled domestic
service, revenue passenger miles grew 5.8 percent, flights rose 4 percent and freight grew 9 percent.
