Health Protection Research Initiative: Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01)

In FY 2004, CDC awarded 21 mentored public health research scientist development grants totaling $5.4 million.  The purpose of the mentored research scientist development award (K01) is to ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained and creative scientists will be available in adequate numbers to carry out the nation’s public health agenda.  The grant is a three year award for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the basic, behavioral, and applied sciences related to health promotion, disease prevention, injury and disability prevention, and health protection from infectious, environmental and terrorist health threats leading to research independence. The expectation is that through this sustained period of research career development and training, awardees will launch independent public health research careers by applying for other competitive types of support such as Research Project Grants (R01) and expand the knowledge and capabilities of current research scientists.
