[USHMM #93820/Irvin Ungar through the Arthur Szyk Society; Original materials: Watercolor, gouache, graphite, and ink on paper; Original dimensions: 11 1/8 " x 9 3/4"] Page dedicated to German and Austrian Jews, 1938 Created shortly after Germany annexed Austria, this page did not appear in the final version of Szyk's Haggadah. It reads: "dedicated to our German and Austrian brethren who are being persecuted for their nationality and religion and who are giving their lives while sanctifying God's name." As he was to do in other works, Szyk portrayed himself in quasi-military garb with his brushes and palette serving as his weapons. |
