Study Tour: Design Miami 2008

December 2—6, 2008

Cooper-Hewitt Design Watch Members travelled to Miami—the hottest design destination. Now in its fourth year, Design Miami is the global forum for collecting, exhibiting, and discussing limited edition design. Cooper-Hewitt’s group visited the world’s leading design galleries in the Design Miami/ Temporary Structure, designed by award winning young architectural practice Aranda/Lasch. This year’s Designer of the Year Award is presented to Fernando & Humberto Campana. The Campana Brothers also recently presented Campana Brothers Select: Works from the Permanent Collection (February 15–August 24, 2008) at Cooper-Hewitt.

Feeding Desire Goes to Delaware

Feeding Desire: Design and the Tools of the Table
Just in time for the marathon eating season to begin, Cooper-Hewitt’s exhibition Feeding Desire: Design and the Tools of the Table is open at the Winterthur, a fantastic museum of decorative arts located in Delaware’s Brandywine Valley. The Winterthur is a curator’s dream destination, with its astonishing collection of historic objects and its richly stocked research library. The Winterthur is also a great place to visit with family and friends, and many great events are planned during Feeding Desire, including a Study Day with Cooper-Hewitt’s very own Sarah Coffin, the lead curator of Feeding Desire. If you’d rather sip, slurp, or simmer than study, check out other special events including a coffee tasting on December 4 or or a lesson on how to cook snapper soup on December 9 (bring a spoon). Feeding Desire is on view at the Winterthur through February 1, 2009.

Virtual Marketplace

World Bank’s Development Marketplace has started a blog to exchange and expand knowledge about innovation and social entrepreneurship for early stage development around the world.

Practitioners from different backgrounds and previous winners will discuss projects, share lesson learned, tools and resources. Expanding beyond the yearly themed global competitions (such as sustainable development, water, sanitation, energy, services for the poor) the blog provides a virtual meeting place where DM participants can collaborate from various locations around the world to create new unexpected opportunities.
