Major Snowstorm Paralyzes South Dakota

A major winter storm brought copious amounts of snow to portions of South Dakota this past weekend (March 18-20).  The storm developed over the southwestern part of the United States Saturday. It spread precipitation into western South Dakota Saturday afternoon and early evening. The precipitation started as freezing drizzle, especially over the Black Hills and adjacent plains.

Precipitation quickly changed to snow overnight Saturday night. The snow was heavy at times Sunday through Monday. Snow tapered off Monday night as the storm moved east of the region. Below you will find a preliminary snowfall map for this storm. Click on it to see the full resolution version.
