The Bonnet Carrie Spillway is located
in St. Charles Parish about 33 miles up river from Canal Street in New
Orleans. It was built to protect the communities downstream of the spillway
from Mississippi River floods by diverting water from the Mississippi
River into Lake Pontchartrain.. The spillway was built from 1929 to 1931
and is owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Since
it's completion, it has been opened during the floods of 1937, 1945, 1950,
1973, 1975, 1979, 1983, and 1997.
