Abstract: (CIT): Dr. Yellen's research is on ion channels - the molecular switches that control electrical signaling in the nervous system and in other organs such as heart and skeletal muscle. His laboratory uses single channel biophysics and directed mutagenesis to relate ion channel function to structure. His studies on voltage-activated potassium channels were recognized by the K.S. Cole Award in Membrane Biophysics from the Biophysical Society. Recently his laboratory has also begun work on the possible role of glycolysis and potassium channels in the therapeutic action of the ketogenic diet in epilepsy. NIH neuroscience seminar series.
