Welcome CIRA Employee. This website contains important information on using E-mail at CIRA.

CIRA uses Microsoft Exchange for messaging. The service is hosted offsite by an outside service provider. All users are responsible for their own E-mail backups and cannot rely on any central backups. Your mailbox has 2 GB of online storage. The maximum size of a message, including attachments, is 35 MB.

Owners of public folders are responsible for backing up those folders as well. Public Folders represent important collaboration information CIRA does not want to lose.

You can change your password using Outlook Web Access (OWA) at http://owa.cira.colostate.edu.

Last but not least, you can use any of the following methods to connect to your CIRA e-mail account, depending on your operating system:

  1. Outlook Web Access (OWA) Webmail: The link is http://owa.cira.colostate.edu. Simply enter your login information and you are ready to go.
For help with Outlook Web Access, contact Michael Hiatt by e-mail at hiatt@cira.colostate.edu.
    Supported Browsers:
You may access OWA with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 or higher. Not all features are available, such as Public Folders, for those using other browsers.
    SPAM:
CIRA's e-mail service applies server-side spam filtering to all incoming e-mail. You can configure additional custom SPAM filtering rules through OWA that will be applied on the e-mail server. These rules will affect all e-mail you receive, even if you access it through the Outlook client on your desktop or another e-mail client.

To configure SPAM filtering rules using OWA and Internet Explorer 6 or higher, click the "Options" button at the upper right of the screen and then click the "Junk E-mail" button on the far left.

    Public Folders:
Public folders are available using OWA when you access it using Internet Explorer 6 or higher. To see public folders, click on the "Public Folders" button at the left of the screen.
  2. Microsoft Outlook for Windows:
STEP A: Click this link to install Outlook 2007
Installation of Outlook 2007 requires an installation key. Click here to get the key. Once complete, proceed to STEP B.
STEP B: Click this link to run the Outlook 2007 Profile Setup Tool
You will be prompted for your username (which is your full e-mail address) and password multiple times during setup. If asked about a security certificate, choose "Yes" or "OK".
    Important Notes:
If you are using a version of Outlook older than 2007, you need to download and install Outlook 2007. Running this tool will create a new Outlook profile. This means that settings in your existing Outlook profile will be lost such as auto-fill history and rules. Some settings, like rules, can be exported first. Other settings cannot be saved. Offline PST files are not deleted, but must be re-associated in the new profile. We recommend noting how many Offline PST files you have and where they are located to facilitate connecting them to your new profile.
    Online Help:
You can learn how to manage your storage and create offline backups from these online Microsoft training courses.
    SPAM:
You can define additional SPAM conditions using Outlook’s Junk E-mail options under the Action menu. Rules set on the client software are automatically applied by the server as well.
    Public Folders:
To view public folders, make sure "Folder List" is selected on the lower left of the Outlook window. The default selection, "Mail", does not show public folders.
