Exploration is fundamental to the human spirit. Since the dawn of our species we have been explorers, and have been motivated by everything from curiosity ranging through the demands of survival and to the need for spiritual inspiration. The ocean, our greatest resource yet to be fully explored, covers over 70% of the earth's surface. And yet, only a fraction of its secrets are known. With this in mind, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration launched a systematic, strategic effort to search and investigate the deepest reaches of our planet's oceans for the purpose of discovery. These remarkable images are the result of many of these exploring efforts. Join the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration as it unlocks the secrets of Davey Jones’s Locker. To learn more of the adventure of ocean exploration, visit the NOAA Ocean Explorer Web site which is sponsored by the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration ( http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/ ).
