Encourage Kids with the Express Your Health!™ Activity Book

The Express Your Health!™ Activity Book for Kids is a new activity book for kids 5 to 10 years of age. Through coloring pages, stickers and puzzles, the healthy heroes encourage kids to adopt safe and healthy habits.

Illustration: A girl jumping ropeEnergy Girl encourages kids to be active. Children and adolescents should get at least 60 minutes (1 hour) of physical activity each day. Make sure your kids are doing aerobic, muscle strengthening, and bone-strengthening activities. Start adding physical activity to your own daily routine, and encourage your kids to join you. Regular physical activity helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints. It can also lower the risk for:

  • Overweight and obesity
  • Heart disease and stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Colon cancer

You and your family should wash hands:

  • Before preparing or eating food
  • After going to the bathroom
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has gone to the bathroom
  • Before and after tending to someone who is sick
  • After blowing noses, coughing, or sneezing
  • After handling an animal or animal waste
  • After handling garbage
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound

To help your kids have healthy teeth:

  • Begin cleaning teeth when the first tooth appears
  • Make sure kids use only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, spit it out, and rinse
  • Supervise brushing
  • Talk to your kids' doctor or dentist

Illustration: A girl wearing a helmet riding a bicycleSafety Girl encourages kids to stay safe. Children are at high risk for many injuries that can lead to death or disability. To help prevent injuries, kids should:

  • Wear proper safety gear when playing sports
  • Sit in the back seat of a car and be properly buckled in with a seat belt and/or booster seat, depending on the child's age, height, and weight
  • Avoid handling fireworks
  • Wear a life jacket and be supervised during water activities

Illustration: A boy eating a carrotNutrition Boy encourages kids to eat healthy. Eating healthy can help lead to a healthy weight. It can also help lower the risk of getting some chronic diseases and conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers, and micronutrient deficiencies. To help encourage healthy eating:

  • Provide plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain products
  • Include low-fat or non-fat milk or dairy products
  • Choose lean meats, poultry, fish, lentils, and beans for protein
  • Serve reasonably-sized portions
  • Encourage your family to drink lots of water
  • Limit sugar-sweetened beverages
  • Limit consumption of sugar and saturated fat
