OBJECTIVE: To determine the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) related to AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) in high school students in Lima-Peru. METHODS: Stratified cluster sampling was performed where the strata were the 3rd, 4th and 5th year students in 7 high schools from low SES neighborhoods and a class of students constitute a cluster. The sampled students answered an 80 question KAP questionnaire. RESULTS: 792 students were interviewed (520 males and 272 females); The age average was 16 years old; 61% have had previous sexual experience; the age at first sexual intercourse was 14 years old. 20% of the males have had homosexual experience and 16% have had sex with a prostitute. 29% have received information about STD from their parents or school; only 26% have ever used condoms. The knowledge about STD, condom use, and AIDS was low (correct answers less than 50%). CONCLUSION: High risk behavior towards AIDS and STD are reported among students of high schools from low social class neighborhoods in Lima. Knowledges concerning STD and AIDS prevention are low. The results of the study will be helpful in the planning of educational programs for young high risk people.
