Issues: Antiretroviral therapy for HIV-infected children is more potent and efficacious than ever, but complex combination treatment regimens with strict scheduling timelines have made it difficult for children to adhere to their medications. Like many other HIV centers, many of our patients attend a summer camp for HIV-infected children. It was observed that children who had not previously been adherent with their medications became motivated to take their antiretrovirals when they witnessed other HIV-infected children taking their medications at camp. Description: This videotape, starring HIV-infected children and adolescents, was developed to motivate and educate HIV-infected children and adolescents who are starting antiretroviral therapy, or who are experiencing difficulty with therapy to adhere to their treatment regimens. The videotape does not try to downplay the difficulties of adhering to medications. It is not intended to be used alone, but should complement comprehensive discussions between the child, his or her family, and health professionals, of HIV treatment, medications, and adherence. Conclusions: The videotape demonstrates to its viewers that HIV treatment does not have to limit lifes pleasures, and that medication taking can be incorporated into everyday life.
