Data & Statistics

National Asian/Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2008

Race/ethnicity of persons (including children) with HIV/AIDS diagnosed during 2006. White: 30%; Black: 49%; Hispanic: 18%; Asian/Pacific Islander: 1%; and American Indian/Alaska Native: <1%. Total number of new cases: 35,314.

Monday, May 19, 2008 is National Asian & Pacific Islander (A&PI) HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Even though the numbers of HIV and AIDS diagnoses for Asian and Pacific Islanders represent only 1% of the total number of HIV/AIDS cases reported to CDC's HIV/AIDS Reporting System, these groups are likely to face challenges associated with the risk for HIV infection. These challenges are especially critical in some regions of the country and for some specific Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicities.
