Post-Doctoral Openings

Investigator:    Edward Giniger
Affiliation:    Axon Guidance and Neural Connectivity Unit, NINDS, NIH, Department of Health and Human Services
Position Type:    Postdoctoral Fellowship
Labs Web Page:    http://neuroscience.nih.gov/Lab.asp?Org_ID=91

Description:

Postdoctoral positions are available for creative, independent scientists interested in studying axon guidance in Drosophila. We are investigating the mechanism of a non-canonical signaling pathway by which the cell surface receptor, Notch, directly controls axon growth and guidance by regulating the cortical actin cytoskeleton via the Abl tyrosine kinase and Rac GTPase. We employ a combination of classical and molecular genetics, biochemistry and advanced in vivo imaging techniques. A second focus is the molecular mechanism responsible for ensuring the accuracy of neural wiring. This work centers on how the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdk5 coordinates the action of different signaling pathways in the growth cone, and also on why improper regulation of this kinase causes adult-onset neurodegenerative disease in both flies and mammals.
