Motorcycle safety education program

New Jersey's Motorcycle Safety Education Program was developed by the national Motorcycle Safety Foundation to improve the safety of all motorcyclists. In this program you will develop the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude for enjoyable and smart street riding.

MVC offers two courses:

• Basic Rider Course
• Experienced Rider Course (see course schedule)

These courses are offered free of charge at the following locations:

• Sea Girt
• Egg Harbor Township

You can only register for the Basic Rider Course by phone beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the course schedule registration date. Call (888) 486-3339 ext. #5045 or (609) 292-6500 ext. #5045. Enter the extension at any time to bypass voice prompts.

Basic Rider Course (BRC)
This program is designed for both new and experienced New Jersey riders and is a great way to learn how to ride safely.

If you complete the course you will not have to take MVC's road test.*

To complete the BRC you must:

• Have valid New Jersey motorcycle license or a validated motorcycle permit
• Attend the entire course–if you are late you will not be admitted
• Bring proper riding gear
• Comply with all directions from the instructor
• Demonstrate minimum acceptable standards for each exercise
• Operate motorcycle in safe manner
• Pass written knowledge test and riding skills evaluation

A motorcycle and helmet will be provided for all participants.

*If you are currently in the GDL program, you are not eligible to receive this waiver.


Experienced Rider Course (ERC)
This course requires you to have a valid NJ motorcycle license or endorsement and your own motorcycle. The motorcycle must be registered and insured and pass a safety check.

If you successfully complete this course, you may be eligible for a two point reduction from your driving record and a defensive driving course credit from your insurance company (if applicable).

To complete the ERC you must:

• Provide proof of insurance and registration
• Bring a federal DOT approved helmet and proper riding gear
• Attend the entire course–if you are late you will not be admitted
• Comply with all directions from the instructor
• Demonstrate minimum acceptable standards for each exercise
• Operate motorcycle in safe manner
• Pass written knowledge test

Proper riding gear

• Federal DOT approved helmet (helmets will be provided for BRC courses)
• Eye protection
• Long-sleeved shirt and long pants (torn or ripped clothing not permitted)
• Full-fingered gloves without holes (leather is preferred)
• Shoes that cover the ankle without heels
• Rain gear (if necessary)
