Currency Redesign Timeline

The United States government issues new currency designs as part of an ongoing effort to stay ahead of counterfeiting, and to protect the economy and the hard-earned money of United States currency users. The following timeline provides information about the redesigned currency introduced to date. Information about future currency redesign efforts will also be provided here as the United States government announces plans.

2008
The New $5 Bill

A redesigned Series 2006 $5 bill was issued on March 13, 2008.

2007
The New $5 Bill

On September 20, 2007, the new $5 bill, with enhanced security features, was digitally unveiled to the public.

2006
A New $5 Bill

On June 29, 2006, the United States government announced that it will redesign the $5 bill as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the security of United States currency.

The New $10 Bill
A redesigned Series 2004A $10 bill was issued on March 2, 2006. The "A" in the series designation indicates a change in some feature of the bill, in this case, a change in the Treasurer's signature.

March 2, 2006: The new $10 bill entered circulation.

2005
September 28, 2005: The design of the new $10 bill was unveiled to the public.

2004
The New $50 Bill

A redesigned $50 bill was issued on September 28, 2004.

April 26, 2004: The design of the new $50 bill was
unveiled to the public.

September 28, 2004: The new $50 bill entered circulation.

2003
The New $20 Bill

To stay ahead of currency counterfeiters, the United States government introduced the new Series 2004 bill designs. For the first time since the Series 1905 $20 Gold Certificate, the new currency featured subtle background colors, beginning with the new $20 bill on October 9, 2003. In this series, different colors are used for different denominations. This helps everyone — particularly those who are visually impaired — to tell denominations apart.

May 13, 2003: The design of the new $20 bill was
unveiled to the public.

October 9, 2003: The new $20 bill entered circulation.
