Joseph Ellis and Annette Gordon-Reed to Discuss Jefferson and His Legacy at the Library on July 25
Historians Joseph Ellis and Annette Gordon-Reed, two of the contributors to Thomas Jefferson: Genius of Liberty (Viking Studio, 2000), the companion volume to the Library of Congress's Bicentennial exhibition about Thomas Jefferson, will discuss Jefferson on Tuesday, July 25, in the West Dining Room, sixth floor, James Madison Memorial Building, at 6 p.m. Part of the Center for the Book's "Books & Beyond" author series, the program is free and open to the public.
Joseph J. Ellis, professor of history at Mount Holyoke College, is the author of American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson, which won the National Book Award, and Founding Brothers: Stories from the Early Republic, which will be published this fall by Alfred A. Knopf. Professor of law at New York Law School, Annette Gordon-Reed is the author of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy and is currently at work on a history of the Hemings family, to be published by W.W. Norton. Gerard W. Gawalt of the Manuscript Division, the Library's Jefferson specialist and curator of the Library's Bicentennial exhibition on Thomas Jefferson, will also participate in the program.
"Thomas Jefferson" is on view in the Northwest Gallery and Pavilion in the Jefferson Building through October 31, 2000.
