Juan M. Saavedra, M.D., Senior Investigator |

Dr. Saavedra received his M.D. from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1965, and Boards in Psychiatry from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1970. Dr. Saavedra joined the laboratory of Julius Axelrod at NIMH in 1971, where he studied the metabolism and function of biogenic amines and neuropeptides. Dr. Saavedra was promoted to Senior Investigator 1989 and is currently also a Research Professor of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He received the Administrator's Award for Meritorious Achievement, DHHS, ADAMHA, in 1987 and is Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology. Dr. Saavedra's laboratory studies the role of neuropeptides in stress, regulation of cerebral circulation and protection against cerebral ischemia.
