Overview of State Program

In 2004, Virginians Against Domestic Violence and Virginians Aligned Against Sexual Assault came together to create the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance (VSDVAA). To make Virginians safer against violence, the Alliance operates a hotline, provides a variety of resources, educates the public, and builds networks.

With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), VSDVAA established the Domestic Violence Prevention Enhancement and Leadership Through Alliances (DELTA) Program in 15 communities across the state. VSDVAA identified staff specialists to assist the funded communities in developing primary prevention plans. Technical assistance was also provided to non-DELTA communities.

In 2007, seven local DELTA projects continued implementing and evaluating intimate partner violence primary prevention strategies. Each local DELTA community completed a community needs and resources assessment, created specific goals, and developed a long-range plan to institutionalize primary prevention initiatives in the community. VSDAA supported these efforts by providing training and by responding to 161 requests for technical assistance.

At the state level, VSDVAA formed an Intimate Partner Violence Primary Prevention Statewide Steering Committee. The Committee includes representatives from the Virginia Department of Health, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Department of Social Services, Women’s Health Virginia, Virginia Organizing Project, Equality Virginia, and local DELTA program representatives. This Committee conducted a needs and resources assessment, created goals, and developed a long-range plan to promote primary prevention strategies throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

State Future Directions

VSDVAA is committed to advancing primary prevention at both the state and local level. In 2008, VSDVAA will assist the seven local DELTA projects in completing long-term primary prevention plans for intimate partner violence and will complete a similar plan at the state level. The Alliance will continue to provide training and technical assistance to local communities. VSDVAA will organize and sponsor a sexual and intimate partner violence prevention conference in October 2008. The conference will feature both state and national speakers.
