Overview of State Program
The Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN) was founded in 1988 by a coalition of domestic violence programs to support and strengthen the state's response to domestic violence. ODVN provides technical assistance and training to shelter programs, Coordinated Community Response (CCR) teams, individuals, and groups across the state, and promotes system changes through public policy development and implementation.
With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other sources, ODVN created a prevention team of four, full-time staff and an Executive Director. The team ensures that ODVN delivers the training, technical assistance, and vision necessary to empower communities to plan, implement, and sustain domestic violence prevention strategies.
2007 Accomplishments:
-
In collaboration with multiple partners, ODVN supported the development of a white paper titled, Improving Family Violence Prevention in Ohio through the Health Policy Institute.
-
ODVN co-sponsored the "Fundraising for Social Change" workshop with the Anthem Foundation of Ohio in May 2007. The featured speaker was Kim Klein.
-
The Network co-sponsored the "New Faces, New Allies, New Leaders: Engaging Men" conference with the Ohio Department of Health in September 2007. Conference speakers included Rus Funk, Byron Hurt, and Brad Perry.
-
ODVN staff members were trained through the Institute of Cultural Affairs in group facilitation methods and participatory strategic planning.
State Future Directions
ODVN is committed to becoming a national model for domestic violence prevention. By 2008, Network goals are to provide the knowledge, skills, and motivation needed to prevent domestic violence.
ODVN's Prevention Team has continued its internal strategic planning process and has identified eight potential areas for growth and expansion over the next five years. Some of the areas include increasing the Network's internal capacity for prevention activities, positively influencing public policy, expanding strategic partnerships, and continuing an intentional, anti-oppression focus for its work.
