Overview of State Program
In 1984, the Kansas Association of Domestic Violence Programs and the Kansas Organization Against Sexual Assault merged to form the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence (KCSDV). For at least a decade prior to merging, the two agencies provided each other with support and advocacy services. Today, KCSDV is a network of 30 member programs across the state working to end sexual and domestic violence, and providing support and safety for all victims of sexual and domestic violence, especially women and their children. KCSDV also offers other services including public awareness and education, advocacy for victims, and social change efforts.
With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two local Community Coordinated Response (CCR) teams are working intensively to integrate primary prevention into their community intervention efforts. These CCRs have implemented youth-centered prevention programs, strengthened community collaboration, and begun a community-driven evaluation of their work. Other Kansas communities are learning from the CDC-funded communities how to implement low- or no-cost prevention initiatives.
KCSDV has increased its primary prevention efforts on sexual and domestic violence by integrating prevention throughout organizational practices. The coalition offers a variety of technical assistance and training opportunities on primary prevention to member programs and allies across the state. KCSDV is also partnering with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) to develop a five-year strategic prevention plan for Kansas.
State Future Directions
Other KCSDV plans for furthering Domestic Violence Prevention Enhancement and Leadership Through Alliances (DELTA) goals include:
- Continue to build capacity for primary prevention at both the state and national levels
- Provide training and technical assistance to member programs on the primary prevention of IPV and community-driven evaluation
- Develop a website focused on primary prevention programming and evaluation tools
- Collaborate with KDHE to assess current prevention programs and develop a five-year strategic plan
