WASHINGTON, Aug. 29, 1997 – President Clinton named Deputy Defense Secretary John J. Hamre to the steering committee of the Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection, White House officials announced Aug. 27.
The commission was set up in July 1996 to examine physical and cyber threats to key U.S. infrastructures, such as telecommunications, energy, banking and finance, transportation and emergency services. The commission will develop a national protection strategy. The steering committee is made up of senior administration officials who oversee the work of the commission on behalf of the Cabinet-level Principals Committee. Prior to taking office as deputy defense secretary July 29, Hamre served as DoD comptroller. He previously served 10 years as a staff member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, where he was primarily responsible for the oversight and evaluation of procurement, research and development programs. He served for six years in the Congressional Budget Office, rising to the position of deputy assistant director for national security and international affairs.
