U.S. Navy physicians Capt. David Harlan and Lt. Cmdr. Allan Kirk, medical researchers at U.S. Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Md. (NMRI), will provide a summary of their breakthrough in organ transplant research on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1997, immediately following the 1:30 p.m. Department of Defense brief in the Pentagon briefing studio, Room 2E781.
In collaboration with other Navy and civilian partners, Harlan and Kirk have discovered a method to prevent "mismatched" transplanted organs from being rejected, thanks to a new therapy that appears to re-educate the immune system.
Both will be available to discuss transplant research and the Navy's immune suppression program.
