17. What is stem cell
transplantation?
In
stem cell transplantation, high doses of chemotherapy and total
body irradiation are used to kill leukemia cells. Since normal
cells in the bone marrow are also killed, the patient's immune
system is very weak. After what is called depletion therapy,
healthy stem cells are given to the patient to restore the immune
system.
