Position title: Archivist

Responsibilities:

The Georgetown University Law Library has an opening for the Georgetown University Law Center Archivist. The Archives serves as the institutional memory of the Georgetown University Law Center by acquiring, organizing, preserving and providing access to records that document the Law Center's history. The Archivist manages all aspects of the collection including record retention and scheduling, processing of materials, providing reference assistance and access of materials to users, and educating institutional offices on records preservation. In addition to the Archives, the Archivist also works with the department's manuscript/personal papers collections, and the Law Center art collection.

Responsible for management of the Law Center Archives; specific responsibilities include:

  1. Using knowledge of archival principles, the Archivist processes or supervises the processing of all material transferred to the collection, ensuring accessibility to and longevity of records. Material is arranged and described, resulting in creation of inventories, finding aids and databases used to access records.
  2. Provides reference service to assist in research for patrons in the use of the collection. Responds to the research needs of Law Center students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as independent scholars.
  3. Responsible for implementing record restrictions applied by governing offices, as well as ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive records.
  4. Responsible for the management of the physical maintenance of the Law Center Archives collection.
  5. Educates the Law Center community on the importance of records management and works closely with individual offices in establishing and implementing record retention procedures.

Manages and maintains the Law Center Archives web pages. Works with the Special Collections Librarian and Assistant in managing the manuscript/personal papers collections.

Qualifications:

Master of Library Science with a concentration in Archives, or a Master of Arts in American History with a certificate from an accredited archives program or a concentration in archival studies.

Public Citizen is a national, nonprofit consumer advocacy organization founded in 1971 to represent consumer interests in Congress, the executive branch and the courts. It fights for openness and democratic accountability in government, for the right of consumers to seek redress in the courts; for clean, safe and sustainable energy sources; for social and economic justice in trade policies; for strong health, safety and environmental protections; and for safe, effective and affordable prescription drugs and health care. It has six divisions and one state office: Auto Safety, Congress Watch, Energy Program, Global Trade Watch, Health Research Group, Litigation Group, and the Texas State Office.

About the Auto Safety Division
The Auto Safety Division campaigns for safer, cleaner motor vehicles. It advocates for legislation, conducts research, and puts out reports on issues such as fuel economy regulations, child passenger protection, vehicle performance safety standards, seat belt use and motor cycle helmet enforcement under state law.

Scope of the Project
Public Citizen is donating its historical papers from the Auto Safety Division to George Washington University National Crash Analysis Center . Currently there are approximately 300 records center boxes and electronic files, and more will be added to the collection. The papers include documents, ephemera, photos, videos, and electronic files. Currently, boxes are labeled and organized by topic; every folder is labeled, and duplicates have been weeded out. The materials will be processed to the folder level, with preservation treatments performed as needed. The electronic files, dating from 2000, are Word documents organized by topic and stored on a hard drive.

Responsibilities:

Working independently but collaboratively with two GW librarians, the Consulting Archivist will appraise the papers, and oversee their arrangement and description. S/he will supervise the work of student assistants and a possible volunteer. The Consulting Archivist will be responsible for setting up the system, overseeing the processing work, and ultimately, the creation of a Finding Aid to provide research access to the collection. In addition, the Consulting Archivist will contact, make site visits, appraise and acquire related collections to develop a comprehensive archive of Auto Safety research. Some materials from the collection will be digitized and made available on a website, as will the Finding Aid/s.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Master's degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school; or master's degree in Public History or History
  • Minimum three years’ experience in processing archival and/or manuscript collections;
  • Professional credential as a Certified Archivist from the Academy of Certified Archivists;
  • Demonstrated ability to set up and oversee archives projects;
  • Familiarity with the variety of materials and formats found in archives and special collections;
  • Knowledge of the procedures for careful handling of rare and archival materials;
  • Familiarity with preservation techniques and safe storage procedures for rare and archival materials;
  • Ability to work productively and efficiently without supervision and to meet project deadlines;
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of student assistants and volunteers;
  • Competence in using word processing, spreadsheet, web editing and scanning software;

Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of this position: climbing a stepstool and handling boxes weighing up to 40 pounds; considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending and lifting.

Salary: Position is part time (~20 hours per week), hours negotiable, for a 3- to 6-month period. Remuneration is $50-$100 per hour commensurate with experience. Work to be conducted at the VA campus of George Washington University past Dulles Airport.

Position title: College Archivist

Florida Southern College seeks an enthusiastic, innovative, technologically-savvy leader for the position of College Archivist. This is a full-time, 12-month faculty appointment reporting to the Director of the Library. The 10,100-square-foot McKay Archives Center adjoining Roux Library was dedicated in February 2009. It is home to the Ruth K. and Charles T. Thrift, Jr., Florida United Methodist Heritage Center; the Governor Lawton M. Chiles, Jr., Center for Florida History; the Florida Citrus Archives; the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame; and the Florida Southern College Archives and Frank Lloyd Wright collections. The archivist will have primary responsibility for administering intellectual, physical, and digital access to these collections. Responsibilities:

The College Archivist administers the operations and services of the McKay Archives Center. This includes establishment and implementation of procedures for the acquisition, processing, and preservation of archival materials; training and co-supervision of archives personnel; point-of-use service; development of educational and outreach programs including Web-based finding aids to facilitate item retrieval, and service on library and faculty committees. The archivist will maintain superlative relationships with off-campus archives stakeholders, and will actively develop archival resources through fundraising and grants.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library / information science with archival training from an ALA-accredited program, or graduate degree in archival studies;
  • Demonstrated familiarity with national standards, current theory, and practice in archival administration, including digital records management and preservation;

Position title: Freedom of Information Act Program Analyst

Responsibilities:

This position is located at the Naval History and Heritage Command, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, DC. The incumbent will manage and coordinate responses to all Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests received by the Naval History & Heritage Command. Incumbent receives all FOIA requests, assigns them to staff for action, sets deadlines, and tracts action; ensures responses meet deadlines and conform to statutory requirements and Navy regulations. Incumbent maintains accurate records of all FOIA correspondence in electronic and paper format and must be knowledgeable on all FOIA issues. FOIA coordinator works closely with the Navy Department's FOIA Office. Qualifications:

YA-02: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower level with managing responses to FOIA requests, assigning work to staff, setting deadlines, and tracking action, interpreting written FOIA requests and applying specific FOIA and privacy regulatory criteria to them, and recognizing when records require classification and privacy review, conducting research, and using automated systems for FOIA correspondence.

The thirty-three member libraries and archives of the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL) collect, care for, and share with a world-wide audience collections that, in their depth and variety, comprise an internationally important body of unique materials for students, scholars and lifelong learners at any level. PACSCL and the University of Pennsylvania Libraries have received funding from the Council on Library and Information Resources to undertake a consortial archival processing project. This project builds on the strengths of an earlier PACSCL Mellon-funded project which produced an inventory of archival holdings among participating PACSCL members. The goals of the project are to process and create EAD finding aids and MARC records for 114 collections and upgrade substandard descriptive tools to EAD finding aids for 82 collections, totaling 5909 linear feet. In a parallel project, the project team will create MARC records for the 1339 collections covered by the Consortial Survey. The project team will be based at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries.

Under the general direction of the Project Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

  • Assist in the processing of Archival Collections.
  • Create MARC cataloging records.
  • Create EAD guides.
  • Supervise student assistants.
  • Perform quality control of student generated records.
  • Travel to participating institutions to oversee students' work.

Training and experience in conservation/preservation treatment, practices, issues, and trends. Demonstrated knowledge of life cycle management of digital assets. Excellent organizational, management, and supervisory skills. Strong public service orientation. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and creatively with administrators, faculty, students, and library staff in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment. Position title: Archives Specialist

Responsibilities:

Rider University seeks an Archives Specialist for the Libraries to create digital images of archival and special materials, focusing on the Louis A. Leslie Collection of Shorthand. Individual will also work with the Archivists-Librarians to organize and process archives and special collection materials, work with cataloging and systems staff to provide appropriate links to catalog records and to create a website highlighting materials from the shorthand collection, assist with creating bibliographic records of archival and special materials, participate in conservation procedures and other library duties as assigned. 75% of this position is grant funded.

Qualifications:

Individual must possess a MLS or equivalent from an ALA accredited program, with emphasis on or experience with the organization, processing, and conservation of archival materials. Ability to work with fragile material, familiarity with digitization processes, and knowledge of bibliographic records are essential. Experience working in higher education environment or archive is preferred.
