The Department of Defense has notified Congress that the
Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United
States has requested the purchase of 30 TH-67 training
helicopters, 30 sets of AN/AVS-6 (V)1 night vision goggles and
other related elements of program support. The estimated cost is
$53 million.
Taiwan will use these helicopters for pilot training and as
replacements for older and non-supportable UH-1H helicopters that
are difficult to maintain and expensive to operate. They will
have no difficulty absorbing these helicopters into their armed
forces. The sale of this equipment and support will no affect
the basic military balance in the region and will have no adverse
impact on U.S. defense readiness.
The prime contractor will be Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc.,
Hurst, Texas. Implementation will require the in-country
assignment of a U.S. government quality assurance team during
delivery and two contractor field service representatives to
support the program for up to two years following delivery.
The Department of the Army will be responsible for all
transactions related to this proposed sale.
